Derived from the Greek word philanthrōpia, meaning “love of mankind”, philanthropy benefits society by addressing root causes of social, educational and health inequalities, filling gaps that governments and businesses may miss, such as wildlife conservation.
Philanthropy is core to the activities of Spirit Invest and through the Spirit Foundation, our mission is to make a meaningful positive impact on the areas in which we invest, namely: ECD and scholar education, community development and wildlife conservation.
The profound advantages of giving can be divided into distinct categories:
Benefits to Society and Communities
By identifying and supporting sustainable Solutions, our philanthropy moves beyond short-term charity by targeting the root causes of issues like lack of education, poverty, community inequality and wildlife conservation.
And while government plays a key role in achieving developmental objectives such as the UN Social Development Goals, our support funds essential programmes that public funding cannot or does not cover.
Our targeted philanthropic funding and support not only empowers our beneficiaries, but it also helps close historical resource gaps, empowering marginalised communities to build resilience and self-sufficiency.
Given our more than three decades long track record of impactful philanthropy, we have developed a powerful ‘business model’ that ensures all overhead costs are covered by the corporate division of Spirit Invest, thus ensuring 100% of donors’ fees go directly to programmes. It also means that our NPOs are tax efficient.
Donors can reduce their overall tax liability when working with us by utilising Section 18A tax certificates which offer numerous benefits for nonprofit organisations and their donors. These certificates are issued by organisations that have been approved as Public Benefit Organisations (PBOs) by the South African Revenue Service (SARS) in terms of Section 18A of the Income Tax Act.
We also believe that there are ancillary benefits to our philanthropy such as helping to attract top talent seeking value-driven workplaces.
Modern strategic philanthropy moves beyond ad-hoc giving by treating charitable contributions as impact investments. It aligns our core values and business goals with data-driven metrics, ensuring both sustained social upliftment and clear, measurable outcomes over time.
Transitioning from traditional charity to a strategic model required us to adopt a structured, results-oriented framework. This means setting clear objectives by identifying targeted causes, in our case, these are ECD and scholar education, community upliftment and wildlife conservation.
We also match our resources to help drive systemic, long-term change. This means a shift from simple output tracking (e.g., number of scholars educated) to outcome measurement (e.g., the holistic growth, development and success of our ECD learners, scholars and alumni).
Critically, we integrate our philanthropic initiatives into our overarching business and personal legacy, turning occasional giving into continuous stakeholder engagement.
Interestingly too, research suggests that for the giver, philanthropy triggers a “helper’s high,” lowering stress and blood pressure, while strategically providing tax deductions and boosting corporate brand awareness.
Acts of generosity, whether volunteering time or donating money, trigger the brain’s reward system by releasing dopamine and endorphins. Giving back has been biologically linked to lower cortisol levels, reduced blood pressure, and a lower mortality rate. Supporting causes you care about instils a stronger sense of empathy, optimism, and overall purpose.
Just a few of the reasons Spirit Invest is so fundamentally committed to supporting the Spirit Foundation.
